NEW ZEALAND STRONGER THAN EVER

By Marco Selorio

New Zealand is a small island country inhabited by 4.5 million people. They have a rich and distinctive mix of European and Maori culture. According to Wikipedia, New Zealand’s taste in music is quite eclectic, with hip-hop one of the many influences that is given a unique interpretation. The music translates into dance. This nation has thrived because they have been able to absorb, interpret and create dance with their own flavor.

The New Zealand dance community has long been admired for their style, strong sense of community and swagger. They are a humble people, but they are also relentless when it comes to winning. What is their secret? Do the tribal gods create something mystical to empower their warrior dancers when they go to battle?

We have witnessed the rawness and power of New Zealanders when Sweet And Sour won WSB Open Division in 2008. They showed Australians and the rest of the world of their unbridled joy, passion and love for dance thru their culture.

A flurry of crews arrived and inspired everyone at WSB. Dziah 2.0, Prestige, Identity, Lil Saintz, Brat Pack, just to name a few.

SAS leader Hadleigh Pouesi shared, “I think our Pacific and Maori culture is a huge factor in why we do well in the realm of dance. We are brought up surrounded by movement and music, most of us are encouraged to learn how to sing, play an instrument and learn cultural dances – it’s in our blood.”

He adds, “The spirit we are able to capture through dances like the haka is easily transferable to adapt to hip-hop and urban dance styles which gives us our unique flavor. Mix that with our raw physicality and you have a recipe for an infectious performance.”

ReQuest Crew led by Parris Goebel captured the WSB Varsity Division back in 2009. She’s now at the top of her game and she represents New Zealand hard out. Her rise into stardom has led to the creation of more crews under The Palace studio and a new style called Polyswag.

Brett Goebel, manager and father of Parris, said it could only be two things that drive New Zealanders to rise above.

“We believe we work harder than most crews around the world and you need to have great choreographers. Being Polynesian means you come from a background of dance and that’s how we created Polyswag. There is fire and fierceness that comes as they dance and it runs through their blood.”

The love and respect for family (whanau) is an integral part of their system. Much like the Filipinos, the Kiwis are known to be close-knit and extend beyond their immediate families. Hence, every time you hear New Zealand get called out in any dance competition, there is always strong support from their own delegation, and that makes them even more special.

Laurent Dunningham, a respected dancer, judge and performer in the New Zealand dance circle, said, “We are a small community. Which also means we are a strong community. We feed and inspire each other.”

Small they may be, but New Zealand are giant killers when it comes to hip-hop dance competitions. Next month, New Zealand crews from Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch and Wellington will head to WSB 2015 on October 2-4 in Brisbane City to represent their country proudly.

We extend our arms openly to New Zealand crews, we are excited to see all of you, and we would be honored to witness another haka in full cry.

The Philippines, led by FMD XTREME, captured an unprecedented four gold medals at WSB 2013.

December 9 Sydney, NSW - The Philippines has once again showed their flair for hip hop dance by capturing an unprecedented four gold medals at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds (WSB) international championship at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre last Sunday.

Filipinos waived their flags proudly as Team Philippines secured their first title of the night by beating Australia in the Country vs. Country team battles. In the group choreography divisions, INDK, a 19-man team composed of Ateneo students, snatched the Monster Crew title. A-Team, composed of Claret high school students, won the Varsity Division title, while FMD Xtreme from Marikina secured the coveted Open Division title. Japan’s Hurricane bagged the Junior Division title to break the sweep.

In the Open Division, the Philippines emulated the same result last year as they blitzed through the top four spots to bag gold (FMD Xtreme), silver (Rockstars) and bronze (A-Team Open). Last year’s silver medalist, Flipendemic Kru, placed fourth overall. In the Monster Crew division, GUDC Project 13 from Davao City placed in the Top 5.

Gold-medal winning FMD Xtreme team leader Rizza Carganilla said, “To be honest we all struggled to get here, but we strived to raise money because we wanted to prove to our fellow dancers that anything is possible.”

Her dance crew received a standing ovation from the 2500-strong audience, and they dedicated their performance to the typhoon survivors.

Dance crews flew in from across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Guam, USA and the Philippines to compete in the annual WSB championship. Over 1000 dancers participated in the three-day street dance festival, which included international dance workshops, electrifying musical performances, beat box battles, Hoop Mania street ball exhibitions, 1-on-1 All styles dance battles and urban choreography competitions.

Global dance superstars Brian Puspos, KRUMP founder Tight Eyez, Japanese masters of locking Hilty & Bosch, Philippine Allstars choreographer Lil’ Pat, Malaysian SYTYCD star Dennis Yin and three-time World gold medalist Lance & Laurence from New Zealand formed the judging panel. Other prominent judges included ReQuest Crew member Samantha Cahill, Finland street dance pioneer Tricky Ricky, former Allstar Orwayne De Leon and WSB Head Judge Joel Gallarde from Triple8Funk NZ.

Now in its ninth year, the World Supremacy Battlegrounds festival will be moving to Melbourne in 2014 with the championship slated for October next year.
